I posted TONS of photos from yesterday’s field trip. The slideshow is under the photos tab. The link to the center’s website is below.
The link below is a copy of the invitation that your student should have taken home on April 25th. Feel free to print a new one, if you need to!
This time of year it is very hard for me to get a newsletter sent out each week, so this is an outline of our plans from now through the end of May. I’ll let you know of changes as they occur!
Language Arts:
We have one final story left in our reading series. It is titled The School Mural and I plan to teach it the week of April 30th – May 4th. The spelling words that go with the story have –ed or –ing endings. We will review the theme throughout the following weeks. In addition to the theme review, we’re still working on our year-end review project where each child becomes an expert on one of our stories and builds a project about it. It’s a fairly extensive book report/book review and the final products will be displayed during our Showcase.
Math:
The rest of the chapter topics teach measurement and graphing. I plan to do more with telling time and money, as well as review addition and subtraction with regrouping in our last month as well.
Science and Social Studies:
We’re near the end of our science Dinosaur chapter and will probably take the test at the beginning of May. The kids have put together fact booklets, made fossils, and read dozens of dino books throughout the month of April. It’s been a fun chapter! We will start a new chapter in May, Properties of Matter. Social Studies’ Junior Achievement program wraps up in early May. The students are having a great time with our State Farm volunteer talking about financial responsibility and our community.
Testing:
Our class will take the final SRI test on May 2nd. Look for the latest Lexile scores from that test in folders later that week. I will also be administering the final Dibels test of the year on May 8th.
Showcase:
2M is working hard on a video project for the Showcase on May 15th. I always hold a parent day with my classes each year as a way to celebrate our year’s successes and review/remember the fun that we had all year. The kids will host the event, and you’ll get to watch the video, see their book reports, read our class stories, and have a snack. The kids are thrilled to show off and celebrate with you. If your student did not show you the invitation, please let me know and I’ll get you a new one. I’d like to have a general idea of the number of parents attending to help me plan snacks and seating, so please return the RSVP cards as soon as possible. Please remember that our classroom is small, so it will be a cozy afternoon! I do ask that younger siblings do not attend in order to give the Second Graders a chance to be your Star for the day. J Let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the Showcase. It begins at 1:30 on the 15th and another detailed note will go home closer to the date.

Language Arts
We do have a spelling list this week. We will pick up with the first story of our last theme The Art Lesson beginning on April 9th. The spelling words that go along with that story all have the oo sound in them.
During writing workshop we’ll begin writing summaries and reviews of all the Stories of the Week we’ve read this year. It’s a cumulative review project that I love to do with my classes because it not only helps review what we’ve learned about the writing process, but it also shows off their growing writing skills and celebrates the hard work we’ve done all year. This writing project, along with a video project, will be part of a learning showcase for parents sometime in May. More info about the project and the showcase will go home in the next few weeks.
Math
We are fully into our money unit and will quickly progress into telling time. These topics move quickly, and we still have a lot to get through before the end of the year, so please take some time to review and practice counting mixed coins and reading an analog clock with your child at home. There are also good review games on Education City to reinforce these topics. Let me know if you need a slip reminding you of your child’s login information. Before Spring Break I sent home information about Xtramath.org. This site isn’t as flashy or fun as EdCity, but it is good practice of basic facts. Again, I can provide login information if you can’t find yours!
Science and Social Studies
We just began our chapter on Dinosaurs in science. It’s a fun chapter, and I plan to supplement it with lots of extras, so the chapter test won’t be until late in April. Social studies and Junior Achievement go hand-in-hand for the next month or so. Our JA volunteer will help to teach more about communities, entrepreneurship, and financial literacy.
Carnival Raffle Basket
Courtney Turnbull is 2M’s parent volunteer for the Washington School Carnival Basket. We have a collection basket in the classroom for fitness items, and she needs all donations by the end of the week in order to get everything ready before the carnival. Please consider donating to our class basket! You can contact me or Mrs. Turnbull (trnblfamily@msn.com) for more information. Thanks, Courtney!!
